FAQ by Parents

The following are answers to several questions and concerns that many parents have with their children joining a fraternity.

Is Lambda Chi at Nevada just another "animal house fraternity"?
Nobody likes stereotypes. Unfortunately, fraternity and sorority members have been categorized as elitist, spoiled, partiers, irresponsible and abusive since the screening of these shows and others. In reality, Lambda Chi is a values-based organization dedicated to the development of character and lifelong friendships.

Should alcohol be a concern if my son or daughter joins a Greek organization? In other words, what is it really like in a chapter?
All fraternities and sororities have strict polices regulating the consumption of alcohol at social functions. All chapters are expected to uphold state, county and city laws, as well as the University of Nevada's Policy regarding the consumption of alcohol.

I want my son or daughter to succeed academically. Will his membership hinder those efforts?
The Greek community at the University of Nevada strives for academic excellence and improved scholastic achievement. Lambda Chi alpha upholds a minimum GPA requirement of a 2.5. If this standard is not met consequences are applied. Lambda Chi also offer academic assistance for its members, providing study hall areas and peer tutoring.

How much does it cost?
For the first semester of Associate Membership it costs $535, following semesters its $505 living out of the house and $425 living in the house.

Does hazing happen?
Lambda Chi Alpha is a non-hazing fraternity and it is not tolerated at any level. We will never ask anyone to do anything that they don't want to. Our associate member process is a learning process of our history on both a local and a national level, as well as an education on our core values and beliefs as part of our "True Brother" program.

How is rushing Lambda Chi Alpha different than other fraternities?
The common perception of "fraternity" is that it involves hazing, alcohol abuse, date rape, and scholastic underachievement. Along with these negative stereotypes come fears of pledging and the pledging process. Pledges (in most fraternities) are essentially on the outside looking in. This means pledges cannot attend Chapter meetings and events, vote, hold office, or be an active participant in the every-day activities of the Chapter. Lambda Chi Alpha, on the other hand, is not a pledging fraternity, and this is one of the reasons Lambda Chi Alpha continues to be the most powerful experience in the fraternal world.
